Directions
When driving to Whitianga we suggest that you travel along State Highway 25a and then onto 25 via Tairua. Some navigation systems will suggest that you travel on some of our unsealed/gravel roads and travelling through Tairua will avoid them.

Travel Suggestion
Leaving from Hamilton?
Head north on SH1 to Pokeno, maybe stop for an ice cream. Then continue on and go left onto SH2 through Maramarua then on SH25 via Waitakaruru. Recommend a stop at The Sculpted Metal Gallery to view an amazing collection of reptiles, birds and fish hand carved out of various products. See how the sculptures are made which will fascinate young and old. Head further on through the Hauraki Plains and if you are into seafood you could make a visit to Piako Pete’s Flounder Shop or stop for a coffee at the “Bugger Cafe”.
Continue on and cross over the Kopu Bridge. Head right at the roundabout and take the next left onto SH25A. Head up and over the hills for about 40 minutes then you come back onto SH25. You could go right on Hikuai Settlement Rd into Pauanui Beach, approximately a 10 minute drive. With its 3km coastline its popular for long strolls, surfing (lessons available) & swimming. Also this beach area has three great golf courses if your looking for a game.
If you continue on SH25 you will come into a pretty seaside village called Tairua which is a great place to stop. Let the kids out at the park for a run around or grab a bite to eat at one of the many eateries. Leaving Tairua be sure to stop at the top of Pumpkin Hill to take a photo of the view of the Mercury Island to the Alderman Islands and beyond.
Travelling about 30 minutes on and you head in to Whitianga, the local town of the area. We recommend you base yourself here for at least 3 nights to do justice to the region with all its attractions and sites to see.
